The Beginning

In 1983, Anita Gale was working on the Space Shuttle program when she was asked to help create something extraordinary for young people: a competition that would challenge students to imagine, design, manage, and defend a real-world space settlement.

Anita helped shape the original concept with Rob Kolstad – a combination of an engineering design competition and a management simulation. Soon, Dick Edwards joined her in developing the materials, scenarios, and ideas that would bring those imaginary future worlds to life.

For decades, Anita and Dick devoted their creativity, professional experience, time, and personal resources to the Space Settlement Design Competitions. What began as one experimental event grew into an international program connecting students with engineers, managers, astronauts, scientists, and other professionals around the world.

They didn’t simply create a competition, they created a place where young people could discover what they were capable of.
