The Beginning
Space Settlement Design Competitions (SSDCs) have been held at the famous NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory; NASA’s John F. Kennedy Space Center; NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center; NASA’s Johnson Space Center; and NASA’s White Sands Test Facility. The idea of Semi-Finalist Competitions selecting International Finalist teams was first suggested by Mark Shaw from Australia, and first implemented by Abhishek Agrawal in Delhi, India, in 2004. This ushered in a new beginning as a truly international experience for high school students from around the globe!
Australian Semi-Finals started in 2007. In 2008, the JSC event was declared an International Semi-Final, and Regional Competitions selected Finalists from Latin America and Eastern Europe. A UK Semi-Final was added in 2009. In 2012, at the request of the UK Space Agency, Anita developed a stand-alone mini-competition RFP for a smaller habitat. “Mini” scenarios require less infrastructure and planning and can be run more often with fewer trained volunteers. In 2018, Semi-Finals were added in the Northwest and Southwest U.S.; the first Canadian Semi-Final was added in 2019.
In 1983, during planning by the Boy Scouts of America for the 1984 National Exploring Conference, the Science and Engineering Cluster steering group decided to do something cool involving space. One problem: nobody on the committee knew much about space. But Evelyn Murray from the Society of Women Engineers knew Anita Gale and Anita Gale knew space! Anita worked on the Space Shuttle program! Letters followed, recommending and expanding ideas, and concluding with a telephone call between Anita in California and Rob Kolstad in Texas. During that conversation, Anita and Rob outlined the basic structure of the event. This would be both a design competition and a management simulation game. Anita and cohort Dick Edwards continued to write the materials for the game from 1983 until Dick’s passing in 2009 and Anita’s passing in 2024. The first Space Settlement Design Competition was conducted at Ohio State University (between thunderstorms and tornadoes) in August 1984, with about 75 participants! It was wildly successful. In 1984 astronaut Story Musgrave would become the first astronaut of many to drop in and watch design presentations around the US!
The Explorers’ Science and Engineering Cluster (led by Brian Archimbaud) was so impressed by this event, they decided to make sure it would continue. They convinced Dr. Peter Mason and the Space Exploration Post at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, to try it locally. They ran the first SpaceSet (Post member Nathan Hawkins invented the name) in 1986. Eighteen SpaceSet competitions, later shortened to SSDCs, were conducted at JPL, with continuing participation by Anita Gale, Dick Edwards, Rob Kolstad, and Dr. Mason. As many as 160 students participated each year, with varying design challenges. Competition organizers requested space settlement designs in Earth orbit, on Earth’s moon, on and in orbit around Mars, and on and in orbit around Venus (including global atmospheric alterations to make it habitable). One Earth orbiting settlement could move to another solar system.
Global Expansion
The first National Competition was organized when SpaceWeek International Executive Director Brian Archimbaud (same guy) decided to include a Space Settlement Design Competition in 25th anniversary celebrations of the Apollo 11 lunar landing, in 1994. Before he figured out how to get back in touch with Anita and Dick, he happened to recognize Anita at the other end of a wine-tasting counter at the Snoqualmie Winery in North Bend, Washington. The National event took place July 17 through 19, 1994, in Washington, D.C. Astronauts and Cosmonauts who volunteered for this event were so impressed with its educational value, they insisted that it continue as an annual event. After Brian Archimbaud left SpaceWeek International late in 1994, the organization decided not to continue supporting the program. Epcot in Walt Disney World agreed in 1995 to help Anita and Dick meet the promise made to the astronauts and cosmonauts. In 1996, the Competition acquired new hosts, The Center for Space Education and NASA – Kennedy Space Center. Sponsorship by Boeing and personal investments by Dick & Anita made continuation of annual International Space Settlement Design Competitions possible. In 2001, the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) venue of the Competition moved to the Kurt Debus Conference Center at the KSC Visitor Complex. In 2005 this facility was unavailable due to a Space Shuttle flight, and alternate arrangements were made at hotels in Titusville. When a 2006 Space Shuttle flight again made KSC facilities unavailable, Competition organizers decided to move Finalist Competitions to the Gilruth Center at Johnson Space Center. In 2014, the Finalist Competition moved back to the KSC Visitor Complex and Center for Space Education due to a scheduling conflict at JSC.
Volunteers
Aerospace Education Competitions is a volunteer-run organization.
Space Settlement Design Competitions across the globe rely on a large “family” of volunteers who facilitate and participate in online and in-person to events. Volunteers serve in roles such as Design Competition “Company” CEOs, Technical Experts, Judges, and administrative roles.
Preparations for each SSDC event involve volunteers who arrange for facilities and food, collect registrations, assign students to companies, distribute background information to participants, arrange for on-site copying and other support, and perform a myriad of other duties mostly invisible to the student participants. Co-Founder Anita Gale prepared most of the “future history” information in each Program Book, and wrote RFPs that defined what students would design at each event until her passing in 2024. These activities are now being undertaken by the Aerospace Education Competition CEO, Board of Directors, and long term volunteers.
Most of our volunteers are engineers and managers (some retired) in real companies and government agencies. Astronauts, authors, visionaries, and National Space Society officers volunteer on a regular basis. Many of our volunteers are past student participants coming back to enjoy the competition experience from a different perspective.
Former participants have gone on to become entrepreneurs, engineers, and managers in the aerospace industry!

Barbara Kennedy
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Aerospace Education Competitions (AEC)
Barbara Kennedy is currently serving as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO of Aerospace Education Competitions (AEC). Barbara has two decades of leadership experience spanning from agriculture & hospitality management, to US Department of Defense program management. She is a former horse trainer, civil engineer for NASA, and public speaker. Barbara has extensive experience supporting STEM education activities through AEC’s Space Settlement Design Competitions; Women in Aviation International’s Girl’s in Aviation Days; and Society of Women Engineer’s Introduce a Girl to Engineering Days. Barbara was selected by Women in Aviation International as one of thirty-one mid-career women from around the world to participate in the inaugural cohort of WAI & Harvard’s Women in Leadership course in 2023. Barbara is excited to bring her passion for public speaking, leadership development and STEM. -
Edward V. Gonzales
Edward is an avid music lover and sneakerhead, Edward Gonzales has crafted a journey from street-smart beginnings to business-savvy success. He started at a leading Los Angeles law firm, O’Melveny & Myers LLP, and later became the "student-whisperer" at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, mentoring interns and early-career professionals.
Currently, as NASA Goddard Space Flight Center's Program Manager for Heliophysics, Edward brings his unique experience and vision to key missions and initiatives. Recently appointed to the NASA Advisory Committee, he continues to shape the future of space exploration through STEM engagement.
Honored with numerous NASA awards and recognitions, Edward is committed to preparing the agency’s next-generation workforce. Having faced personal challenges, including the loss of his father, police profiling, and gang violence. He deeply understands the struggles many students face. He advocates for diverse pathways to NASA, emphasizing that success isn’t always linear and that everyone’s trajectory is unique.
Soon, he’ll take on the role of Workforce Strategy and Director of Strategic Planning for the Office of the CEO at AEC.
Edward embodies resilience, the consummate comeback kid who believes every setback sets the stage for an even greater comeback.

Ty White is an award winning Chemistry, Math and Biology teacher who got involved bringing students to ISSDC in 2018. After seeing what this event meant to his students and how it affected their perception of STEM-Identity, he got more involved in organizing the Southwest Regional Qualifier, and then started collaborating with others to create more events. Ty has a real passion for making events accessible to all students, as everyone deserves an opportunity to participate and to develop their skills working with others. -

Jack Gafford
AEC Board, Treasurer
Jack Gafford is currently a senior systems engineer living in Houston Texas working for a major aerospace company contracted to design, build and operate manned spaceflight platforms for NASA. Jack has spent over 39 years involved with the Space Shuttle, International Space Station, Constellation, and Commercial Crew Transportation Programs. Jack has progressed his career through aerodynamic analysis, flight trajectory design, system verification; logistics support equipment development projects and system engineering and integration disciplines. Jack also enjoys volunteering for high school design competitions, amateur radio, automobile restorations, woodworking and miscellaneous general handyman projects.

Hannah Rens

Hannah Rens is currently a systems engineer based on the Space Coast, working on a Commercial Crew platform. Hannah’s work has included vehicle life span, serving as an anomaly manager on console during her spacecraft’s missions, subsystem engineering. Hannah was a 4-time regional and 2-time International Space Settlement Design Competition participant and is honored to serve on the board supporting the organization that helped her discover her passion for human spaceflight.
